They met when Mike Stamford set them up as roommates, and Sherlock amazed him with his intellect and ability to get into dangerous situations. Unarguably the most important person in John's life, and the one he would do anything for, including die (which he has.) Sherlock's cocaine habit is a constant worry on John's mind.
